Lone Worker Protection

What Is the Lone Worker Function and Why It Matters

The Lone Worker function provides employers with a proactive method for meeting health and safety obligations when staff are required to operate alone, without direct supervision or other team members nearby. It’s a crucial feature for sectors such as construction, logistics, utilities, security, and maintenance — where individuals often work in isolated or high-risk environments.

How the Lone Worker Feature Works

When the Lone Worker feature is activated on a portable radio, it works by monitoring user activity through regular time-based check-ins. At pre-programmed intervals, if no radio activity (such as pressing the push-to-talk button) has occurred, the device will emit a local alert tone.

This tone serves as a prompt, asking the user to confirm they are safe and responsive. The radio user must cancel the tone manually — a simple action that confirms they are alert and unharmed.

Automatic Alarm Signal for Safety Response

If the user fails to respond to the alert within the preset response window, the radio automatically sends out an emergency alarm signal. This alarm is typically sent to supervisors, control rooms, or other radio users, alerting them that the individual may be in distress and requires immediate assistance.

This built-in safety measure ensures that if a lone worker becomes incapacitated or unable to communicate, help can be dispatched quickly — potentially preventing serious injury or escalation.

By using radios with the Lone Worker function, businesses not only enhance operational safety but also demonstrate a strong commitment to employee welfare and compliance with health and safety regulations.
